A master of abstract art, Serge Poliakoff proves a subtle geometer whose approach to colour prevails over formal rigidity. For his first collaboration with Galerie Berggruen in Paris, he took up a gouache of the same year to create the poster for his November 1957 exhibition. Dominated by shades of red that create depth and relief, the composition is organised around colours that seem to disperse from the centre, with yellow, blue, white and black creating the artist's singular rhythm.
