A rather unusual subject matter for Braque, this work is charming in its portrayal of two fish floating about in their transparent home. Surrounded by captivating colors, the two geometrically portrayed fish pop out against the brilliantly colored background. Braque utilizes line and shadow to add depth to the piece, creating a three-dimensional bowl that rests upon a flat surface, with a candlestick placed nearby to give the illusion of size.
Created in 1950, this color etching was created after an original painting of the same title. Hand-signed by Georges Braque (Argenteuil, Val-d'Oise, 1882 - Paris, 1963) in red pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 100 in the lower left margin, this work is published by Maeght, Paris.
