Handcoloured aquatint.
Ref: CG-26-207
Atsushi Kaga’s After Tohaku (2026) is a handcoloured aquatint that reimagines the atmospheric poetics of the Japanese painter Hasegawa Tōhaku through Kaga’s distinctive contemporary language. Issued in an edition of 20 and measuring 53 x 81 cm, the print presents a nocturnal landscape of intertwining tree branches dusted with white, set against a deep black sky scattered with stars. Small, childlike hooded figures populate the branches, climbing, sitting, and balancing in quiet, playful gestures. Softly glowing gold clouds punctuate the darkness, introducing warmth and a sense of suspended time. The delicate aquatint textures contrast with the luminous hand-applied color, creating a refined interplay between traditional printmaking technique and narrative whimsy. The work bridges historical Japanese landscape aesthetics with Kaga’s introspective, imaginative world.
